Elmer And Butterfly

Elmer helps a butterfly out of trouble and is amused by the thought that such a tiny creature could ever repay the favour. A later difficulty reveals that size is not the best measure of someone's usefulness. David McKee's warm story celebrates kindness and mutual help, giving children a reassuring example of how everyone can have something valuable to offer.

Age suitability and learning: Preschool (3-5), Primary (6-8). The illustrated story suits shared reading with younger children and more independent exploration as reading grows. Following events encourages prediction, sequencing and vocabulary; discussing the characters gives children practice recognising feelings and considering other perspectives.
