Elmer And The Flood

Floodwater changes the elephants' familiar world, and when a young elephant is in danger, Elmer must find a way to help. David McKee's adventure gives the cheerful patchwork character a more urgent challenge, while keeping friendship and cooperation at its centre. The story invites children to follow a rescue, discuss feelings in a difficult situation and recognise the value of practical kindness.

Age suitability and learning: Preschool (3-5), Primary (6-8). The illustrated story suits shared reading with younger children and more independent exploration as reading grows. Following events encourages prediction, sequencing and vocabulary; discussing the characters gives children practice recognising feelings and considering other perspectives.
