Elmer Hardback

Elmer's patchwork colours make him stand out from the other elephants, and he wonders whether looking the same would make life easier. His attempt to blend in reveals how much his friends value the character he already has. David McKee's cheerful classic combines a playful adventure with a reassuring message about individuality, belonging and the joy of celebrating someone just as they are.

Age suitability and learning: Preschool (3-5), Primary (6-8). The illustrated story suits shared reading with younger children and more independent exploration as reading grows. Following events encourages prediction, sequencing and vocabulary; discussing the characters gives children practice recognising feelings and considering other perspectives.
