Elmer's Walk

Elmer takes a walk and notices the beauty around him, while the other animals are too busy to pause. His unhurried journey gives familiar surroundings a new sense of wonder, showing how much can be missed when everyone is rushing. David McKee's gentle elephant story offers children an inviting way to talk about attention, curiosity and enjoying small discoveries rather than always hurrying towards the next thing.

Age suitability and learning: Preschool (3-5), Primary (6-8). The illustrated story suits shared reading with younger children and more independent exploration as reading grows. Following events encourages prediction, sequencing and vocabulary; discussing the characters gives children practice recognising feelings and considering other perspectives.
