Farmer Duck

Duck works all day while a lazy farmer stays in bed and demands more. When the other animals see how tired their friend has become, they decide that things must change. Martin Waddell and Helen Oxenbury turn an unfair arrangement into a spirited farmyard story, with repeated exchanges for joining in and a satisfying opportunity to talk about fairness, work and standing together.

Age suitability and learning: Preschool (3-5), Primary (6-8). The illustrated story suits shared reading with younger children and more independent exploration as reading grows. Following events encourages prediction, sequencing and vocabulary; discussing the characters gives children practice recognising feelings and considering other perspectives.
