Five Bears By Catherine Rayner

Five bears meet one another, each bringing a different appearance and a different first impression. As their encounters unfold, they begin to discover connections that matter more than the differences they initially notice. Catherine Rayner's warm, expressive story offers a gentle picture of friendship forming, giving children space to talk about assumptions, acceptance and the unexpected pleasure of finding someone to share the journey.

Age suitability and learning: Preschool (3-5), Primary (6-8). The illustrated story suits shared reading with younger children and more independent exploration as reading grows. Following events encourages prediction, sequencing and vocabulary; discussing the characters gives children practice recognising feelings and considering other perspectives.
