Madeline - Ludwig Bemelmans

In an old house in Paris, twelve little girls follow a careful routine, but the smallest, Madeline, brings a brave and lively spirit to their world. An unexpected illness changes the usual pattern and reveals how much her companions care. Ludwig Bemelmans's classic pairs rhythmic storytelling with a distinctive city setting, celebrating courage, character and the warmth of being part of a group.

Age suitability and learning: Preschool (3-5), Primary (6-8). The illustrated story suits shared reading with younger children and more independent exploration as reading grows. Following events encourages prediction, sequencing and vocabulary; discussing the characters gives children practice recognising feelings and considering other perspectives.
