Much Ado About Nothing

Sharp-tongued Beatrice and Benedick seem determined never to fall in love, while another couple's happiness is threatened by a cruel deception. Shakespeare's comedy weaves teasing, mistaken assumptions and a serious test of trust into a lively story. This children's retelling introduces the pleasure of a plot in which what people believe is often very different from what is actually happening.

Age suitability and learning: Primary (6-8), Older children (9-12). The adapted prose offers primary and older children a manageable introduction to Shakespeare, with adult discussion useful for the darker events and historical attitudes. Following the plot supports comprehension and inference, while comparing characters' motives develops discussion of choices, consequences and different viewpoints.
