Poetry Prompts Joseph Coelho

Joseph Coelho offers prompts that help children begin writing their own poems. Playing with sounds, images and ideas makes poetry feel like something to try, giving young writers a practical route from noticing an everyday detail to turning it into expressive language.

Age suitability and learning: Primary (6-8), Older children (9-12). The practical prompts suit primary and older children ready to experiment with their own writing. Activities support vocabulary, sound awareness and expressive language, while developing a poem encourages observation, imagination and the confidence to revise and share an individual idea.
