The Dog Who Was Almost Perfect

Doris the dog is proud of doing everything perfectly, until one mistake makes her worry that her owner will stop loving her. Meeting kind new friends helps her see the experience differently. Jack Kurland's warm picture book gives perfectionism a recognisable emotional shape, offering children a reassuring story about being valued for who they are, accepting mistakes and finding the confidence to try again without needing to be flawless.

Age suitability and learning: Preschool (3-5), Primary (6-8). The illustrated story suits shared reading with younger children and more independent exploration as reading grows. Following events encourages prediction, sequencing and vocabulary; discussing the characters gives children practice recognising feelings and considering other perspectives.
