The Good Bear

Thea hopes that visiting her father in Norway will bring them closer, but the trip feels disappointing and lonely until she encounters a frightened bear. Helping the animal becomes a secret adventure that tests her courage and changes the way she sees the people around her. Sarah Lean's winter story combines wilderness atmosphere with family feelings, making an absorbing read about trust, kindness and an unexpected friendship.

Age suitability and learning: Older children (9-12). The longer narrative suits children ready to sustain attention across a developing story, whether reading independently or sharing it aloud. Following characters and events supports comprehension, vocabulary and reading stamina; discussing motives, settings and choices encourages inference, empathy and imaginative thinking.
