Tom Gates Top Of The Class

Tom Gates has school life, friendships and his reputation to think about, and deciding what being top of the class actually means is another challenge. His doodle-filled diary finds humour in everyday ambitions and the mishaps that interrupt them. Liz Pichon's lively combination of pictures and text gives readers an accessible way into a longer story, with familiar experiences to recognise and opinions to question.

Age suitability and learning: Primary (6-8), Older children (9-12). The illustrations and conversational voice offer developing readers a welcoming route into a longer book, while older children can enjoy the humour and character details. Following the diary supports reading stamina, inference and understanding of perspective, with familiar situations prompting conversation about friendships and choices.
